Howard police investigate speed camera arson

Howard County police are working to determine who set fire to portable speed-camera equipment near Glenelg High School.

A newspaper carrier discovered the fire in the 14000 block of Burntwoods Road in Glenelg about 5 a.m. Saturday and called 911, police said. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.

Investigators determined that the fire was arson. The county's speed camera vendor plans to pay for the damage – the cost hasn't been determined — and replace the equipment by Monday morning at a new location, police said.

County police had added two portable cameras to school zones last month. They rotate those two devices among 13 schools where they can't use the county's speed-camera vans because of road configurations.

People with information about the arson should call 410-313-STOP.

Police are offering a $500 reward.
