A 22-year-old Ellicott City man whose family reported him missing Saturday was found dead of an apparent suicide in Baltimore, according to police.
Police said Monday that the body of a man believed to have jumped off a parking garage deck near downtown's Port Discovery museum Friday night has been identified as Salmaan Sultan. There was no identification on the body when it was found Friday. According to his family, Sultan was a senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County who was finishing up his undergraduate studies in economics and was expecting to graduate in August.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Sultan's death is being investigated as a suicide.
Kiran Sultan said Sunday night — prior to her brother's body being identified — that he had failed to return to the family's home in Ellicott City Friday evening and that Howard County police told the family that his car had been spotted by police in downtown Baltimore about 9:30 p.m. Friday.
According to his sister, Sultan had called their mother three times during a 90-minute period beginning about 5 p.m. Friday to say that he was stopping at the gym and the Mall in Columbia and would be home around 8 p.m.
When he failed to return, the family reported him missing to Howard County police Saturday. On Sunday, after contact with the family, Howard County police put out a release about Sultan's disappearance and said that he might be a "danger to himself."
