Crews have repaired and replaced most of a water main break that caused a sinkhole closed a section of Main Street in Ellicott City Wednesday, Howard County officials said.
An 11-foot section of a 12-inch pipe was repaired by 5 p.m. and county officials said they expected to restore water "momentarily." Main Street between Rogers Avenue and Ellicott Mills Drive will remain closed until the road is repaired, which county officials expected would be no later than Saturday morning.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area, the county said.
The county reported the water main break between Rogers and Klein avenues on Main Street before the morning commute.
Images from the scene of the water main break showed water erupting out of the roadway. At the point where the water was coming from the ground, a sinkhole had formed, and the front end of a small car had gone nose-down into the opening.
Around noon, officials said that the gushing water had been cut off at the site, and the county's Department of Public Works was working to repair the water main.
Around 11 a.m., police reported that an unrelated gas leak closed an additional portion, from Rogers Avenue to Hill Street. By 11:45, the gas leak had been repaired.
