Man, 41, fatally struck by car while saving dog in Ellicott City

A 41-year-old man died after he was struck by a car while stopping his dog from running into the road near Old Ellicott City Monday, police said Wednesday.

The man, Paul Gutoski Johnson, of Pasadena, was near the intersection of Frederick and River roads about 10 a.m. when he stepped out into the eastbound lane of Frederick Road and was hit by at 2000 Toyota Solara headed east, police said. He was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died just after 1:30 p.m., police said.

The dog was not injured in the crash, and the driver of the Toyota remained at the scene.

Baltimore County police are investigating.
