Remembrance event The Freestate Happy Wanderers Volksmarching Club sponsors a 9-11 commemorative walk at Montpelier Mansion, 9650 Muirkirk Road in Laurel. The event starts between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and finishes by 5 p.m. The walk features 5K and 10K trails on natural surfaces and sidewalks. Fee is $3. Information: 301-725-6979.
Benefit run/walk Long Reach High School's field hockey team hosts a "Lightning Flash 5K run/walk and Mommy Trot" beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the school's track, 6101 Old Dobbin Lane in Columbia, where the girls field hockey players will guide participants. Registration is $15. A post-race celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Eggspectations, 6010 University Blvd. in Ellicott City. University of Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson will be the keynote speaker. Retired educator Sydney Cousin will be honored as the Humanitarian of the Year, and Ascend One Corp. will receive the Service Award. Tickets are $74; $650 for a table of 10.
