Concert and celebration In honor of Black History Month, the Columbia Chapter of the Links Inc. and Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory presents the 25th annual Peabody Concert featuring students from the Peabody Conservatory and Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University at 3 p.m. at the Johns Hopkins Physics Laboratory's Kossiakoff Center, 11100 Johns Hopkins Road in Laurel. Film screening and discussion HopeWorks presents a screening of "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" at 7 p.m. at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. The film challenges viewers to use hip-hop as a means to understand how our culture allows sexism, harassment and violence to thrive. Lecture Author/performer Stuart Isacoff will give a free lecture/demonstration on "Temperament Through Time: How Music Became a Battleground for the Great Minds of Western Civilization" at 2 p.m. at Howard Community College's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. Lecture tells of battles over the tuning of the musical scale, placing them in the context of quarrels in the worlds of art, philosophy, religion, politics, and science. Movie and blanket The River Hill Community Association's Teen Advisory Committee invites all to watch the movie "Brave" and participate in making blankets for children in need beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Claret Hall, 6020 Daybreak Circle in Clarksville. Families are welcome to bring their own blankets to just watch the movie. Admission is $5 per person and $10 per family. Popcorn, hot chocolate, and water will be served. Annual arts gala Howard County's annual "Celebration of the Arts" will be held March 29 at Howard Community College's Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. Tickets are $100 and $50 and are available by phone at 410-313-2787 or online at hocoarts.org. The gala begins with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring a silent auction of artwork by local artists, culinary treats provided by local restaurants and live musical performances. At 8 p.m. the presentations of the Rising Star Competition and the 2013 Howie Awards take place. $100 tickets include the reception, silent auction and reserved seats in the Smith Theatre; $50 tickets include the reception, silent auction and general seating in the Studio Theatre for the simulcast.
