As a women’s studies major at the University at Albany, Catherine Bailey knew some day she would open a business that tailors to women.

In 2012, 10 years after graduating, she and sister-in-law Jessica Perrine achieved that goal by opening Lavish Salon and Spa in Fallston.
The business, which offers a range of hair, nail, skin and medi-spa services, is designed to provide staff members with a work-life balance and flexible hours, Bailey says. As a result, Lavish has “an extremely low turnover” — one of the keys to the business’s success, she says.
“The girls love coming to work every day, and the clients feel the fun,” Bailey says.

While the salon and spa does provide men’s services, the clients are predominantly women. Lavish offers chemical peels and facials, and refers clients to Dr. Lisa Feulner of Advanced Eye Care for injectables like Botox and Juvederm. Medi-spa services account for almost half of Lavish’s business, Bailey says.

The 75-minute “Age Smart Facial,” which uses massage techniques and vitamin and hydroxyl acid exfoliation to improve skin texture and appearance, is a customer favorite.
“People are surprised at how many services we offer,” Bailey says. “We’re not just a mom-and-pop hair shop. We’re an upscale spa you would find in any [big] city.”
