The seasonal calendar flips to spring this month, but it's often still chilly and soggy. After a long winter of hunkering down inside, families are itching for excuses to get out of the house.

Fortunately, there are plenty of fun, weather-appropriate activities happening in March, from a (mostly indoor) downtown Bel Air festival to a leprechaun-themed tea. Here's a look at what to do as a family this month around Harford County.

1. Sample sweet treats.

Downtown Bel Air will celebrate all things sweet on March 4, with a series of pop-up shops scattered throughout the district during Sweets on the Streets.

Existing downtown shops will partner with and play host to other businesses for the day. The event is dubbed Sweets on the Streets, as vendors will focus on "sweet" wares, from candy and cupcakes to clothing to art.

"It's a good way to see what we have in downtown Bel Air while enjoying something new and sweet," said Downtown Bel Air marketing director Roman Davidyuk.

Sugary treats are always popular with kids, but there's more for folks with less of a sweet tooth.

"We're going to have food pop-up shops, or it could be a clothing pop-up shop or an art-based pop-up," says Davidyuk. "Sweet things can be food, antique items, art, pottery."

2. Meet dinosaurs.

Harford Community College's Amoss Center will play host to Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Live, an interactive program designed by paleontologists that puts you front and center with lifelike dinosaur puppets.

It's part of a year-round series of entertaining, educational and kid-friendly programs called Live at HCC. Also in March, see the New Shanghai Circus and a living history exhibit focused on Rosie the Riveter.

3. Sip tea in Celtic style.

Steppingstone Farm Museum recently launched a children's version of its popular historic tea series. This March, to tie into St. Patrick's Day, the tea has a leprechaun theme.

"We'll cover some fun, entertaining history about the traditions of the Celtic isles and leprechauns," said Executive Director Angela Yau. The afternoon will also include lessons in basic tea manners.

Yau said that children are welcome to bring a doll or teddy bear to accompany them, and they can dress up if they would like. She warns that the tea will likely sell out, so grab tickets early.
