The Havre de Grace Warriors kept their grip on the Susquehanna Bowl Friday night and Edgewood won as well as both teams improved to 3-0.
At Havre de Grace, quarterback Mike Flosser connected with Kenny Sumpter for a 30-yard touchdown with just over a minute left to lift the Warriors over Perryville, 28-21.
Edgewood, meanwhile, knocked off rival and visiting Joppatowne (0-3), 18-6. Bel Air, Harford County's other unbeaten, hosts Overlea at 11 a.m. Saturday.
In Havre de Grace's win, the Warriors fell behind 12-0 early. Perryville used an opening drive, 20-yard shovel pass to Marcous Garcia to get on the scoreboard. The extra point was blocked.
Zac Zacerous added a nine-yard touchdown run to boost the lead to 12-0.
But a pair of second quarter touchdowns helped the Warriors take a 14-12 lead into the half. Havre de Grace finally found the end zone midway through the second quarter with Flosser sneaking over from a yard out.
The Warriors added the go-ahead touchdown with just 37 seconds left in the half. Flosser tossed a swing pass to Christian Penrow, who battled through a few tacklers for the 20-yard touchdown. Clay Harris added the second of his four extra points.
Perryville quickly turned the game around in the third quarter. A blocked punt produced a safety and on the ensuing free kick possession, Zacerous rumbled 15 yards into the end zone on a fourth and four call.
Zach Strong's PAT gave Perryville the lead, 21-14.
Havre de Grace retied the game with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Flosser (15 carries, 105 yards) raced 26 yards for the score. Then he directed the Warriors winning drive, which began at the Havre de Grace seven.
"It was a great feeling, I knew Kenny had it in him the whole way," Flosser said. "He had a fumble earlier in the game, I told to him to shake it off and I'll trust him later in the game. He shook it off and played like nothing even happened and that's exactly what we're supposed to do."
Flosser completed six passes on the drive, three to Sumpter. The first two went for first downs and the third for the big score.
"It means a lot, knowing the prestige in this bowl," Sumpter said of his touchdown catch. "Knowing that we were playing our rival Perryville, it just means a lot to bring the bowl back and repeat from last year."
Warriors linebacker Sean Greeley was a force on defense all night.
"We started off not running any stunts, blitzes and they were pounding on the outside runs so we decided to start stunting and get 'em in the backfield, and it seemed to work toward the end of the game," Greeley said.
