Outlook: The 2016 John Carroll softball team has a strong core of returning players that are young, but gained valuable playing experience last year. The Patriots will primarily rely on the pitching arms of Dieter and incoming freshman Kropkowski. Receiving their pitches will be strong defensive catcher James, who also supplies a powerful bat in the lineup. The team's greatest defensive strength is up the middle with shortstop Sheehan and centerfielder Centi. Centi will provide power in the lineup while Sheehan provides a versatile bat as a bunter/slapper and as a consistent offensive threat. Meryl will anchor first base and provide an effective bat offensively. Freshmen Spaeth and Sweeney are expected to contribute significantly right away. "The team does not have a lot of depth so will have to rely on many players with little varsity experience in order to be successful," Hudson, who was head coach at John Carroll from 2007 to 2011, said.
