Abingdon athletes lead Harford efforts in Cecil County

Scott Coon and Heather Thompson, both of Abingdon, led Harford County athletes in the North East Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon Sunday in Cecil County.

Coon finished third overall among 247 competitors in the triathlon. He completed a 750-meter swim in the North East River in 13:26, a 13-mile bike course in 35:42 and a 5K run in 17:54, the third fastest of the race. Finishing in 1:08:30, he led the 45-49 age group by 7 1/2 minutes.

Thompson finished 13th among the women and led the 50-54 age group by almost 5 minutes in 1:23:14. She clocked 15:07 on the swim, 40:23 on the bike and 25:07 on the run.

J. Tobin of Fallston was one of five age-group winners from Harford County. He led the 70-74 age group by 20 minutes with a time in 1:39:50.

Bob Brown of Abingdon placed fourth among 53 competitors in the duathlon, which began with a 1.5-mile run in place of the swim. He led the 55-59 group by almost 5 minutes in 1:06:22.

Dina Lastner of Abingdon led the women's 40-44 group in the duathlon. She completed her first 1.5-mile run in 10:08 and her closing 5K in 24:46 to finish in 1:22:17.

Thomas Sacker of Bel Air finished second in 55-59 in the triathlon. He was 15th out of the water in 13:34 and finished in 1:16:14 for 25th overall.

Third-place age-group finishes in the women's triathlon went to Mary Jacob, Fallston, in 35-39 in 1:32:16; Heather Hoffman, Abingdon, 45-49 in 1:28:57; and Robbie Reeves, Street, 50-54 in 1:31:03.

Third-place in the duathlon went to Justin Markel, Havre de Grace, 35-39, 1:18:48; and Kelly Bryant, Jarrettsville, women's 45-49 in 1:37:51.

Other Harford finishers were Alex Sposito, Bel Air, 1:20:23; Chris Kennedy, Abingdon, 1:20:45; Rich Buchwald, Bel Air, 1:21:24; Mark Sposito, 1:22:48; Matt Hill, Bel Air, 1:29:44 (duathlon); Wendy McPherson, Forest Hill, 1:38:57; William Moore, Fallston, 1:41:26; Loren Elchik, Bel Air, 1:44:17.

Annapolis 10-Miler

The conditions were hot and humid but less crowded in the 41st Annual Annapolis 10 Miler Sunday.

Kaitlin Moynihan, 21, of Bel Air, placed sixth among the women in 1:06:47, 1 minute faster than she ran last year. She placed third among women 20 to 24.

Victor Garcia of Havre de Grace was seventh in men's 20-24 in 1:05:48. Kim Roberts of Bel Air, eighth in women's 25-29 in 1:21:07; Mike McMonagle of Bel Air, ninth in 25-29 in 1:09:23; Mike Feinberg of Bel Air, ninth in 50-54 in 1:10:29; and Tom Werner of White Hall, 18th in 30-34 in 1:12:14.

Twenty other Harford runners were among the 2,693 finishers, about 800 fewer than last year. Jeffrey Stein of Washington, D.C., led the men in 54:53 and Caroline Bauer of Columbia, the women in 1:00:44.

In other races

Duane Christy of Havre de Grace won the Voices of Hope 5K in Perryville Saturday ahead of 80 others in 21:18. Willow Borowski of Edgewood won the women's race in 29:05. Christy finished eighth among 150 in a second race on Saturday, the Sickle Cell 5K, in which he ran 21:22.

Brian Walker of Bel Air was the runner-up in the 50-54 age group of the Top of Delaware Triathlon in Memory of Paul Schlosser Jr. Aug. 21 in Newark. He covered a 0.25-mile swim, 11.4-mile bike and 2.6-mile run in 1:13.03.

Zac Noel and Liz Collard led the RASAC Southampton 5-Miler Sunday in Bel Air. Noel won the men's race by a quarter mile in 29:54. Kevin Hennessey finished second in 31:55 and David Stevenson, third in 33:19. Collard led the women in 39:10, ahead of Cathy Bartholomew, 43:06, and Katie Streib, 43:53.
