Shiver me timbers! Bystry, Kiger race to wins in annual Pirate 5K

Rebecca Bystry of Havre de Grace and Ryan Kiger of Perryville were the top finishers in the annual Pirate 5K in Havre de Grace Saturday.

Bystry, an eight-time Harford County track and field champion at Fallston two decades ago, ran 21:22 to finish 4 seconds ahead of runner-up Jessica Hodgson of Peach Bottom.


Kiger, a member of Perryville's state championship cross-country team in 2013, led a field of 195 across the finish line at the Susquehanna Museum at the Lock House. Timed in 17:50, he finished 15 seconds ahead of Kyle Edgerton of Arlington, Va.

Charles Powell II placed third in 18:22 and led the 50-59 age group by 5 1/2 minutes. David Santamore, eighth overall, led the 40-49 in 20:24; and David Callaghan, ninth, led the 60-and-over runners in 20:32.

Others in the men's top 10 were Keith Campion, 18:52; Greg Peterson, 18:54; Steven Holmes, 19:33; Nick Ku, 19:59; and George Algard, 20:54.

In the women's race, Cheri Withers finished third in 22:14; Teri Welsh, fourth in 22:31; and Claire Mehney, fifth in 22:32. Others in the women's top 10 were Nancy Hill, 22:56; Christy Yeager, 23:04; Rachel Brosnan, 24:19; Liz Collard, 24:26; and Brittany Baeder, 24:26. Welsh led 40-49; Hill, 50-59; and Dianna Coen, over-60.

Moonlight 5K

Tyler Muse of Bel Air built a 1-minute lead in just over a mile then increased it to almost 3 minutes in winning the Moonlight 5K in 16:43 Saturday at Bel Air's Equestrian Center.

Joshua Thompson finished second in 19:31, and Martin Angulo, third in 20:15.

Tessa Helble, 21, of Hunker, Pa., won the women's race in 23:33. Megan Campbell was second in 24:30, and Amanda Wagner, third in 25:15.

Age-group winners were Ethan Fox (22:18) and Willow Borowski (27:43) in under-13; James Fox (22:54) and Rachel Beardsley (35:27) in 13-19; Edgar Narciso (20:41) and Karina Thomson (28:55) in 20-29; Kevin Drever (20:56) and Holly Leasure (25:29) in 30-39; Adam Wysocki (22:20) and Kelly Warden (27:19) in 40-49; Duane Christy (21:46) and Martha Martin (33:51) in 50-59; and Robert Smoot (32:27) and Duyen Brisker (35:04) in 60-69.

Eagleman 70.3 Triathlon

Renee Gray of Bel Air and J. Tobin of Fallston qualified for the ITU Multisport World Championships in Canada in August with their performances in the Ironman Eagleman 70.3-mile triathlon in Cambridge Sunday.

About 1,520 athletes completed a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Gray finished in 6 hours, 12 seconds, placing 26th among 102 women in the 45-49 age group. Tobin finished eighth in the men's 70-74 age group in 7:39:21. Son Mark Tobin, 41, finished in 5:50:15 for 94th in 40-44.

Heidi Tompkins of Abingdon was the women's runner-up in the AFCEA Race for Excellence 5K in Columbia Saturday. She finished in 21:32, 15 seconds behind the winner. Michael Jazwiecki of Abingdon ran 21:15 to place fourth in 30-39 and 11th among 576 finishers. Second in 15-19 was Jillian Orndorff of Havre de Grace in 25:51.

Kayla Blanchard of Bel Air finished third in 20-29 in 25:53 in the Charm City Run 15th anniversary 5K in Timonium Saturday.

Mike Puopolo of Forest Hill placed fourth in men's 50-54 age group in the Cape Henlopen Triathlon in Lewes, Del., Sunday. He completed a 1/4-mile swim, 10-mile bike, and 3.1-mile run in 1:14:16. Courtney Ajello of Bel Air led the 20-24 age group in 1:18:28. Ken Walker of Fallston was ninth in 50-54 in 1:23:17.

Greg Wright of Abingdon placed fifth in the 55-59 age group of the Independence Triathlon in Quakertown, Pa., June 4. He completed a 1/4-mile swim, 10-mile bike, and 2-mile run in 1:03:34.
