For the second time this week, the Aberdeen IronBirds found themselves playing a double-header after a rainout the day before.
Friday, however, this two-game battle with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers was in Aberdeen at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, and unlike Tuesday's results, the IronBirds split Friday's games.
Aberdeen (16-24) dropped the first contest, 7-1, but battled back to take game two, 6-2.
In the win, Aberdeen overcame a 2-1 deficit with a five–run, third inning outburst. Preston Palmeiro, son of former Major Leaguer Rafael Palmeiro, who joined the Aberdeen roster Friday, singled and scored in the inning. Palmeiro collected his first hit and RBI as an IronBird in the first inning.
Cole Billingsley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Chris Clare and Guillermo Salas added RBI singles. Jaylen Ferguson closed the scoring with a two-run single.
Cody Dube (2-1) pitched three and a third scoreless innings to get the win. He gave up two hits and struck out three.
In game one, 2016 top pick Cody Sedlock suffered his first loss, allowing a hit, two walks and two earned runs over three innings.
The Scrappers scored twice in the first inning and once in the fifth before blowing the game wide open with a four-run rally in the sixth.
Aberdeen's lone run was scored in the fifth. Kirvin Moesquit scored the run, driven in by Ryan McKenna (2-for-4). Billngsley led the offense with three hits.
The IronBirds and Scrappers will close out the series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Aberdeen will head back to Brooklyn on Sunday to begin a three-game set and be back in Aberdeen Wednesday through Friday against Tri-City.
