IronBirds win first series, thump Auburn, 9-2

The Aberdeen IronBirds won their first series of the season Friday night, beating the Auburn Doubledays, 9-2, in the rubber game played at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.

Each won one of the previous games by shutout.

The IronBirds (3-5) will begin a new three-game series Saturday as the Connecticut Tigers come to town. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. The series continues Sunday at 5:35 p.m. and ends with Monday's game at 7:05 p.m.

In Friday's win, Auburn (5-3) struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning. Aberdeen rolled from there.

The IronBirds quickly tied the score 2-2 in the third. Ryan McKenna walked and moved to second on a balk. Alejandro Juvier then drilled a line drove over the right field wall for his first homer of the season.

Aberdeen broke open the game with a pair of back-to-back, multiple run innings. Four runs were scored in the fifth, with Chris Clare and Juvier each delivering RBI doubles. Chris Shaw singled in McKenna and Juvier with the other two runs.

Aberdeen closed out the scoring with three runs in the sixth. McKenna added his second RBI double in as many innings and Juvier completed his huge night with a single to plate the final two runs.

Juvier finished 3-for-5 with a double, home run and five RBIs. Jaylen Ferguson went 2-for-4.

Steven Klimek (1-1) pitched six innings of three-hit baseball to earn the win in relief. He struck out one.

North Harford alum Kevin Mooney made an appearance for Auburn. Mooney got two groundouts and a strikeout in his scoreless inning of work.
