IronBirds get walk-off win Monday on Moesquit's two-out single

The Aberdeen IronBirds celebrated a walk-off win Monday night to take their home series, two games to one, over the Vermont Lake Monsters at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.Kirvin Moesquit's ninth inning, two-out, infield single drove in Chris Clare win the winning run in an 2-1 IronBirds win.Clare got the winning Aberdeen (27-34) rally started with a one-out single. Clare stole second before a flyout put the IronBirds in the two-out situation. Daniel Fajardo followed with a single that moved Clare to third setting up Moesquit's game-winning at bat.Steven Pallares doubled and scored for Vermont's only run in the first inning. Aberdeen countered in the third, taking advantage of one of four Vermont errors. Fajardo reached on the error leading off the inning.Moesquit singled Fajardo to second and Ryan McKenna singled Fajardo in to tie the game. Moesquit and McKenna both had two hits to lead the Aberdeen offense.IronBirds starter Alex Wells had another outstanding effort. Wells threw six innings, allowing four hits and an earned run, while striking out seven. Wells' ERA is now 1.98.Yi-Hsiang Lin (4-0) threw three scoreless innings for the win, giving up three hits and also striking out three.Aberdeen will hit the road for another quick three-game series Tuesday through Thursday. The IronBirds will visit the Staten Island Yankees with first pitch set at 7 p.m. each night.The IronBirds will be back in Aberdeen for the weekend, hosting the Hudson Valley Renegades Friday (7:05 p.m.), Saturday (7:05 p.m.) and Sunday (5:35 p.m.).Sunday-Monday movesThe Aberdeen roster also had a pair changes to it Monday as announced by the Baltimore Orioles.On Sunday, pitcher Jake Bray was transferred to Delmarva from Aberdeen, while on Monday, catcher Ronald Soto was transferred to Aberdeen from the Gulf Coast League.Sunday lossThrough five innings of Sunday's game at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium, Aberdeen looked in good shape for a win with its 6-2 lead. That, however, is why they play nine innings.Vermont outscored Aberdeen, 6-1, over the final four innings to edge the IronBirds, 8-7.Vermont took a 2-1 lead after an inning of play, but Aberdeen scored five times in the fifth to grab the 6-2 advantage. Jason Heinrich supplied the big blow, belting a three-run home run. It was Heinrich's third long ball of the season.The Lake Monsters responded immediately, scoring four runs in the sixth to tie the game and adding single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to win.Aberdeen added a run in the seventh as well. Ryan McKenna walked, stole second and scored on a throwing error by the Vermont catcher on his steal of third base. McKenna has 14 stolen bases on the season.Preston Palmeiro led the IronBirds offense with three hits, a run scored and two RBIs. Kirvin Moesquit added two hits, a run scored and his ninth stolen base, while Austin Hays also had two hits to raise his team-best batting average to .357.Max Knutson (1.1 innings pitched) was charged with a blown save, allowing two hits, three walks and an earned run. Andrew Elliott (2 innings pitched) took the loss, giving up two hits, two walks and an earned run.Saturday winAberdeen scored a pair of runs late in Saturday night's game to beat Vermont, 3-1, at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.With the game tied 1-1 in the eighth inning, Aberdeen strung together three straight hits with two outs to provide the winning runs. Chris Clare and McKenna hit back-to-back singles and Hays followed with a double to plate both runners.Both teams had scored a run in the sixth inning. Vermont used a pair of doubles to score, while Aberdeen used a walk to Moesquit and another RBI double from Hays. Hays finished with two doubles and all three Aberdeen RBIs.McKenna also had two hits and a run scored and Mike Odenwaelder had a double in three trips to the plate.Tyler Erwin pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball to earn his first win. Erwin walked a batter and struck out two. James Teague pitched the final inning, striking out one, to pick up the save, his first.Starter Keegan Akin threw three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing two hits and a walk, while striking out three. Xavier Borde gave up the run on five hits over two and a third innings. He struck out two.
