The Aberdeen IronBirds suffered a pair of losses Wednesday night, dropping both ends of an doubleheader at Vermont against the Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League play.
The 'Birds fell 5-3 in the opener and were then shut out in the nightcap, 2-0. Both games were seven inning contests and the doubleheader was a result of Tuesday's game being rained out.
Aberdeen will play one more at Vermont on Thursday and then head to Lowell, Mass. for a three-game series over the weekend. The IronBirds will be back at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium Monday to begin a short three-game homestand against West Virginia. Monday's game begins at 7 p.m.
In the opening game loss, Aberdeen (5-8) was out-hit, 10-5, and three errors on defense didn't help either. The IronBirds trailed 1-0 after an inning, but Collin Woody and Cole Billingsley put Aberdeen ahead.
Woody clubbed his first home run of the season in the second inning and Billingsley followed with his first long ball in the third. Both players were part of the Baltimore Orioles 2016 major league draft.
Vermont trailed briefly. The Lake Monsters scored four runs in the bottom of the third and that's all they needed. Two of Aberdeen's three errors played into the big inning.
Aberdeen scored another single run in the fourth. Chris Clare singled in Frank Crinella, who had also singled and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch.
Woody added a single and was the only IronBirds player to have multiple hits. Miguel Mercedes and JaVon Shelby had 3-for-3 games to lead Vermont (6-7).
Travis Seabrooke (1-2) took the loss, pitching five innings. He gave up nine hits, two walks and five runs (three earned). Yi-Hsiang Lin pitched an inning of relief, allowing one hit.
In game two, Aberdeen was held to just three hits, a Mike Odenwaelder double and singles from Jaylen Ferguson and Jerry McClanahan.
Vermont, which had seven hits, scored a single run in the second inning and added another run in the fifth. Jeong-Hyeon Yoon (0-2) took the loss, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Yoon struck out four.
Garrett Cortright, in Aberdeen on rehab assignment from AA Bowie, pitched two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out one.
