The Patterson Mill Huskies opened their Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference schedule in solid fashion Monday, shutting out visiting Edgewood, 8-0, in the Chesapeake Division opener for both schools.

Junior Kaley Thompson, who missed last season with an injury, scored three goals to lead the winners. Thompson's first goal broke open a scoreless game with 28.31 left in the first half.

Thompson collected a ball on the left side of the field and with no one to challenge, sent a high shot from just outside the 18-yard box that sneaked over the head of Rams goalie Emma Grantland. The ball bounced high into the upper-far corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

"I noticed just off of starting to play, how their defensive backs would play and pursue the balls, so when I realized that the girl I was up against didn't always pressure out, towards me, I just took her on her outside back and I'm left footed and I love hitting it with my left foot, so I just whammed it from really far out from the 18," Thompson said.

The 1-0 Huskies lead stayed that way until the final three minutes of the half, when Thompson's second goal came on a loose ball with 2:59 to play. A minute later, the lead grew to 3-0 with Sommer Law scoring unassisted on a breakaway.

It took a while for the Huskies to find the net again, but when they did, it was Marissa Lapinsky scoring back-to-back goals. Lapinsky's first goal was unassisted at the 23:01 mark of the second half.

Lapinsky scored again with 17:26 to play with an assist from Alexis Utain, who then took over and scored the next two goals.

Utain took a nice feed from Annie Wysong to make it 6-0 with 4:20 remaining and then added a goal by herself with just 36.7 seconds left.

Thompson completed her hat trick as time expired, banging in another loose ball.

Huskies goalie Marie Claire Cicenia finished with five saves and Grantland posted 13 saves for Edgewood.

"Certainly a tough conference, that was a good win," Huskies head coach Michael Parker said. "We have a lot of tough teams in the division and we need to get ready for that. We need to show that we're a two half team and so that's what we did, we worked the ball really well second half, didn't quit."

Cobras blank Mariners

Harford Tech was in the win column Monday, beating visiting Joppatowne, 10-0, in non-division play.

Emma Ryan scored three times for the Cobras, while single goals were scored by Gwen Gasu, Lindsey Sewell, Amaya Dedeaux, Danica Lavarias, Faith Bangs, Emily Kissner and Taylor Reider.

Gasu and Reider added two assists each and Kissner had one.

Tech keeper Jordan Althoff made two saves and Joppatowne goalie Caitlin Meurer finished with 20.
