Edmondson Red Storm coming to Havre de Grace Friday for state football playoff game

There's a Red Storm coming to Havre de Grace.Yes, the Red Storm football team from Edmondson-Westside High School in Baltimore City will visit James R. Harris Stadium Fridaynight to meet Havre de Grace (9-2) in a Class 1A state semifinal.The game, which will send one team to the state final, will kick off at 7 p.m.The Red Storm, or at least its coach, is no stranger to Havre de Grace. Fourth year head coach Corey Johnson is a resident of the city and a teacher at Edmondson. Will Johnson's familiarity with Havre de Grace make a difference?Edmondson (6-6) enters the game with two playoff wins after going 4-6 in the regular season. The Red Storm operates a pistol spread offense, with sophomore quarterback Teon Gardner (6-2, 180) taking every snap from the shotgun.Without question, the Red Storm passes more than it runs. Gardner has thrown for 1,476 yards and nine touchdowns. He also threw five interceptions. Deshawn Ruffin, a 6-2 receiver, has been the main receiving threat. Ruffin, who coach Johnson says is a D-1 type player, has 63 receptions for 947 yards and five scores. Senior receiver Roland Green (52 catches for 640 yards) and running back Aaron Clark-Williams (27 for 511) are also top receiving threats.When the Red Storm does choose to run, Coach Johnson points to the combo called thunder and lightning. Thunder, sophomore Trejour Owens, has done most of the damage, running for 386 yards and four touchdowns. Lightning, sophomore Kevin Martin, has no stat line, while senior Kelly Richburg has added 183 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries.The Red Storm averages 250-260 pounds across the front line, with junior Malik Morgan (6-2, 280) anchoring the line. &quot;We are very fast and athletic. Our receivers are over 6-1 and can go get the football,&quot; Coach Johnson said. &quot;If they play us two high (defensively) it will allow our running game to work.&quot;Havre de Grace counters with a more balanced offense with senior quarterback Mike Flosser running the show. Flosser and junior running back Jasai Stansbury have 755 and 721 yards, respectively on the ground and a combined 18 touchdowns. Flosser has also thrown for 1,792 yards and 20 touchdowns, while getting picked off six times.Junior Jordan Day (708 yards, seven TDs) and senior Will Ashman (466 yards, two TDs) both have 38 receptions. &quot;Our defense has to control their quarterback,&quot; Coach Johnson said. &quot;Make sure he doesn't control the game for them.&quot; Coach Johnson also noted that his team will have to defend all five skill positions, six including Flosser.Defensively, Edmondson deploys multiple fronts, with attack blitz schemes. Owens, who doubles as a linebacker, leads the team with 98 total tackles. Senior Davon Brown (72 tackles) and senior Cameron Edwards (37 tackles) are next on the list. In the secondary, senior Josue Curbean is the leader, while senior Shamar Barnes has a team-best five interceptions. One returned for touchdown.The Warriors defense, a 4-3, or 4-4 set, is led by junior linebacker Sean Greeley, who despite missing a handful of games, leads the team with 121 total tackles. Others leading the defense are junior tackle Reggie Marks (98 tackles), senior end Luke Smith (92 tackles) and linebacker Stansbury (59 tackles).Ashman leads the secondary with four interceptions (one TD) and Day has three. The Warriors also have a weapon in junior kicker Clay Harris. Harris, whose four field goals led last week's region title win, has been good on 12 of 14 field goal attempts this year, with a long of 41 yards.Edmondson Coach Johnson says everybody's healthy and the Red Storm played a tough schedule, dealing with 4-6 quality teams.&quot;It took us a while to see what we do best,&quot; Johnson said.
