Hawaii's big first inning swamps Hickory's bid to advance at Cal Ripken World Series

Hickory's bid to return to the Cal Ripken World Series United States Championship was brought to a screeching halt Thursday afternoon at Cal, Sr.'s Yard in Aberdeen.Honolulu, Hawaii, sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored eight times, en route to an 13-3, four-inning win.Hawaii will play for the U.S. Championship Friday at 5 p.m.Hickory got off to a fast start, scoring twice in its first at bat. Brendan Purtell and Cody Kurek both singled with two outs. A double steal allowed Purtell to score and Kurek came around to score when Parker McIlhenney reached on a dropped pop-up in the infield.Hawaii's big inning was capped by a high, majestic three-run home run from Kamaehu Sanchez. Isaiah Omiat added an opposite field, two-run shot in the fourth. Trayce Young went 3-for-3 to lead Hawaii's 10-hit attack.&quot;We thought we still had a shot even after they put up eight in that first inning, they're a good hitting team,&quot; Hickory manager David Miller said. &quot;We saw them hit a couple other games, not quite that well, but they really put a number up in the first inning there, eight runs, and it ended up too much to overcome.&quot;Matt Archibald also homered for Hickory, driving the ball out to center leading off the fourth. Kurek finished with two hits to lead Hickory.Brendan Purtell started for Hickory, but lasted just five batters. Kurek, who had a big series for Hickory at the plate and on the mound, took over and pitched into the fourth, before giving way to Archibald. Jameson Hussey pitched all four innings for Hawaii.Hickory players get together for one last cheer in the dugout despite Thursday afternoon's 13-3 loss to Honolulu, Hawaii in a U.S. semifinal game at the Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen. The loss eliminated the Harford County from the tournament.Hickory, representing Harford County, finished 3-1 in series pool play prior to Thursday's game.
