Cougars blank Huskies
The Fallston Cougars scored three first half goals Tuesday night en route to a 3-0 shutout of host Patterson Mill in an Chesapeake boys soccer game.
The Cougars (3-0, 8-1) were pretty dominant offensively, throughout the game, but managed just the three goals.
Junior defender Jared Puglisi got the scoring started, drilling a left foot shot from 35 yards out. The unassisted goal came 10 minutes in with Puglisi controlling a loose ball and hitting a high shot toward the far post, of the head of Patterson Mill goalie Ryan Jeon.
"I was just looking at the open field and coach yelled shoot it, so I shot it and put it in and then everybody went crazy," Puglisi said. "That's how we started and just looking for a good year and that's what we're doing."
The Cougars were back at it seven minutes later. Ben Word, a senior central midfielder and captain, provided a long throw in that goalie Jeon got a hand on. The ball, however, fell right to the foot of junior Jake Kauffman, who easily one-timed the ball into the net.
"This season's been really good for the team, we've dominated a lot of teams, this was our first test," Word said. "A lot of tougher competition out tonight. They got a little chippy at times during the game, but coach was telling us to keep our heads. Worked some of the time and game plan goes well, got the win."
The third goal came off a set play after Patterson Mill was called for a push. Corey Madigan took the kick, delivering a low pass to Caynnan Taylor. Taylor charged the pass, beating the defender and flicking the ball past Jeon. The goal came with 4:08 left in the half.
The Cougars had a couple of decent scoring chances in the second half, but Jeon (eight saves) made a sliding stop away from goal and Word missed a penalty kick, hitting his shot too high.
Cougars goalies Nick Mudd and Mason Mullaney combined for two saves.
