Port Deposit VFW named 'All-American Post'

VFW Post 8185 and District 10 Commander D. Harvey Cunningham Jr. announced last weekend that Port Deposit's Post 8185 made "All-American Post" again this year, which is the highest award given at the national level.

Post 8185 earned this honor twice in the last three years and three times during the past 68 years. Harvey also reported that Post 8185 was again named Maryland's "Community Activities Post of the Year." At this year's convention, held in Ocean City in June, Post 8185 earned additional awards. Cunningham was named All-State Post Commander while Tom Alexander was named All-State Post Quartermaster. Men's Auxiliary President Steve Gibson was named Men's Auxiliary President of the Year. Congratulations, all!

The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 8185 earned several awards at June's convention as well, including "Historian of the Year." They placed in many categories including "Membership," "Hospital," "President's Special Project," "Veterans and Family Support," "Cancer Aid and Research" and "Legislative." Way to go, President Kathy Heaton and her ladies!

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Patricia Clinger, formerly of Perryville, as she passed away on July 4 in West Virginia. Eight years ago, Pat had moved to an assisted living facility near her daughter-in-law and grandson in Morgantown.

Happy birthday to Keri Smith Bittner, Port, as she celebrated on July 6.

Former resident Bill Waibel celebrated his big day on July 11.

The members of the Water Witch Fire Company will serve a chicken barbecue dinner on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Station off Jacob Tome Highway. The cost is $10 per dinner and the platter is first rate. Be sure to get there early for your carry-out because they tend to sell out early.

The monthly board meeting of the Port Deposit Heritage Corporation was canceled last week because of bad weather. The group will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 7:30 in the Paw Paw Building.

The Paw Paw Museum, at 98 N. Main St., will be open on Sunday, July 13 and Sunday, July 27 from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Bainbridge Museum at 6 S. Main Street has set "Bainbridge Day" for Saturday, Aug. 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. Members can view the museum and then be bused to the former Bainbridge Naval Training Center for a tour of the site. Why not join the Museum Association? Yearly dues are $12. Stop by some weekend. The museum opens from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays year-round. Museum Curator Joyce Linkey changes the displays from time to time and new acquisitions seem to arrive every month.
