HdG to honor veterans Monday in Tydings Park

A peaceful Veterans Day to you, dear readers,

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, is a tribute to all of those who served in our armed forces. The day is also titled Armistice Day and Remembrance Day in Canada, in recognition of the surrender of Imperial Germany in World War I, Nov. 11, 1918. It has been named Veterans Day since 1954.

The Veterans Day observance sponsored by the American Legion Post 47 will commence at 11 a.m. in Tydings Park to honor all military veterans. Phone 410-939-0234 for details.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving; did you know on Nov. 11, 1620, the men on the Mayflower ship signed the Mayflower Compact, before landing in Massachusetts at Cape Cod? This compact was an agreement of the first laws for the new colony.

Volunteers will serve the regular Tuesdays lunch to those in need. Nov. 12 is also World Kindness Day and Grace Place volunteers help to spread it! Thank you.

Nov. 10 is "Take a Model Train to Work Day." This national day of action was launched in 2001 in conjunction with the World's Greatest Hobby publicity program, in an effort to focus attention on the hobby of model railroading. A train aficionado myself; visit for more details.

To learn more about trains, bridges and the crossing of the Susquehanna River by the railroads, join a Havre de Grace historic walking tour. Tours run every Saturday and Sunday or by appointment with costumed guide for $12. Call 410-939-0565 for details or reservations.

Nov. 12 is Elizabeth Cady Stanton's birthday. Along with Susan B. Anthony, Stanton was the driving force behind the women's suffrage movement. On Nov. 2, 1920, more than 8 million American women voted for the first time. Stanton was born in 1815. Visit

Scorpios having birthdays in November include: Kaylie Lyons (Nov. 1); Jan Biondo and Beverly Prior (Nov. 6); Barry Hewitt (Nov. 9); Kim Coakley (Nov. 11); Hanna Lynch, Staci Carpenter, Anna Wasielewski, my twin sisters Jeanette and Deborah Browning and the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum (Its founding) (Nov. 12); Charlie Hiner, David Rimel, Mitch Shank and Barbara Keithley (Nov. 13); Paul Keithley (Nov. 14); and John Fisher and Kathy Keen (Nov. 15).
