It's almost here, the big HdG July 4th celebration

Saturday is the big day in Havre de Grace, dear readers,

Flags, banners and bunting throughout Havre de Grace are shouting red, white and blue in expectation of the Havre de Grace Independence Parade at 2 p.m., traversing Union Avenue from Lafayette Square (Legion Square) to Tydings Park. A concert will commence in Tydings Park at 7 p.m. followed by a spectacular fireworks display at dark (about 9:15 p.m.). The Havre de Grace carnival operates in Tydings Park tonight (Friday) 6 to 10:30 p.m., and Saturday, 4 to 10:30 p.m. Contact 410-939-2100 for information.

T-shirts for the independence celebration are available at the Havre de Grace Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Center, 450 Pennington Ave. for $7 while supplies last. War of 1812 T-shirts are also there for $10. Phone 410-939-3303.

First Fridays will be held in downtown Havre de Grace tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. Since July 5 is Workaholics Day, let's take a break this evening and join the crowds at First Fridays. Have a blast!

Venture to the Saturday Farmer's Market, 9 a.m. to noon, 450 Pennington Ave. near the visitor center.

Grace Place Serving Center will host a free, hot luncheon to anyone in need July 9 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 114 N. Union Ave., 410-939-2107.

Since July is National Ice Cream Month, stroll to Bomboy's Ice Cream parlor on Market Street or visit Bruster's on Route 40 for the frozen treat to celebrate the birthdays of Earl Cullum (July 6); Rebecca Craig (July 11); Amanda Shaffer (July 12); and Scott Kirkendall (July 13). July anniversaries will be remembered by Bob and Debbie Jobes (July 7), Amanda Shaffer and Gary Wasielewski (July 8) and Diane and Wayne Krauch (July 10). Congratulations all.

Take a guided historical walking tour every first weekend through November, Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. or schedule a tour by appointment. The July 12 to 14, weekend will be a huge Pirate Fest in Havre de Grace. On July 12, a concert will be held in Tydings Park, 7:30 p.m. and a pirate pub crawl will begin at 7 p.m. A Pirate Fest 5K Run will begin July 13 at 8 a.m. with a Pirate Gala 7 to 11 p.m. at the Lockhouse.
