April brings showers, opening of Susquehanna Museum of HdG

It's April showers, dear readers, but things to do are stacking up.

The Susquehanna Museum of Havre de Grace at the Lockhouse reopens April 12, 1 to 5 p.m. for the season. Free admission. Contact 410-939-5780, or


Take a guided historical walking tour every Saturday through November, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. or schedule a tour by appointment. Enjoy a 1-1/2 hour walking tour through tree lined streets. Tickets available, 410-9398-1811, 410-939-0565 or

The HdG Historic Preservation Commission has a quiz for students kindergarten to 5 grade and grades 6 to 12 to win an oval sticker "I walked the Lafayette Trail." Quiz copies are available at the HdG Visitor Center, 450 Pennington Ave., 410-939-2100. A great family project!


Grace Place Serving Center will serve a free, hot meal April 15 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 114 N. Union Ave., HdG. 410-939-2107 for details. volunteers will provide the luncheon to anyone in need who enters.

Take advantage of clean-up-days, April 19 and 26 and May 3, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., sponsored by the HdG Department of Public Works, 410-939-1800 ext. 1107.

Carol Zimmerman, 410-939-2770, told me about HdG Community Gardens. The HdG Green Team with the invites you to garden with them, by picking up an application form at City Hall, 711 Pennington Ave., 410-939-1800. Each community garden features your own plot, a shared water supply and other common resources at a modest fee of $35 annually.

As you plan ahead for Easter, April 20, remember: Good Friday, April 18, noon to 1 p.m. the Susquehanna Ministerium sponsors the Good Friday Way of the Cross. Meet at Jean Roberts Park, 503 St. John St., 410-937-1790.

On April 19, the HdG Recreation Committee sponsors and Easter Egg Hunt in Tydings Park at noon, 410-939-6124.

An Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Shamrocks of St. Patrick's Church commences April 19 at 10 a.m., rain or shine at the church on Congress Avenue.

It's not too early to collect those items for the HdG community-wide yard sale, April 26, rain date April 27. Contact me for details, 410-939-6562. Spaces are available for $10. Businesses downtown, how about a sidewalk sale? Coakley's Pub, Doodads, Billie Smith's Designs and Flickerscents are planning to participate.

On a wet note, if some of the drizzle of April showers has you thinking of Noah's Ark or floods in titanic proportions, remember April 14, 15 1912 commemorates the 102nd anniversary of the sinking of HMS Titanic to the bottom of the Atlantic. Perhaps a breezy walk along the HdG Promenade, one day this week, will put things in a better perspective.
