Tech beats Edgewood and Bel Air beats Tech in Monday wrestling

In a rare Monday wrestling meet, Harford Tech defeated host Edgewood, 49-30.

The Cobras won the first three bouts and rolled from there. Hunter Yoakum pinned at 138 pounds and Andrey Kalwa won a 15-6 major decision over Ariq Nixon at 145.

Tyler Bennett added a sub-minute pin at 152, before the Cobras forfeited the 160 bout to Luke Johns.

Josh Hucke added a Tech win at 170, 167-10, over Andru Nixon, but the Cobras then forfeited two more bouts. Winners for Edgewood were Tim Blackman at 182 and David Coates at 195.

Matt Nalls won for Tech at 220, pinning Trenton Malone in :36, while Edgewood got a pin at 285 with Chase McCannon stopping Wes Atteberry in 4:02.

Edgewood's last win came at 106, where Zach Boyce pinned Tony Weber in 1:22. Tech won the last four matches. Zach Granese,113; Brendan Hayes, 126; and John Lechert, 132, all pinned and Andy Schwarz earned a forfeit at 120.

Tech also wrestled Bel Air and did not fare as well, winning just one bout in a 67-6 loss.

Kalwa opened the meet with Tech's lone win, pinning Rob Carlin in 4:59 at 145.

Cameron Watts won at 152 for Bel Air, prior to Tech forfeiting the next four weight classes.

When contested action resumed, Bel Air won all eight bouts, five by pin. Pinning were Tom Gomez at 220, Dakota Crawford at 285, Cody Seibel at 106, Tyler Ham at 120; and Brady Stafford at 132.

Bel Air's other winners were David Reagan over Granese, 8-4, at 113; Dalton Foster at 126; and Liam Bowers at 138.

Patriots are runner-up

John Carroll's wrestling team was back at it over the weekend, traveling to Solanco High Schoolin Quarryville, Pa. to defend the title as Mule Classic Wrestling Tournament Champions.

The Patriots came up short in this year's19-team event, which featured Southeastern Pa.'s best, 49-30, and one of Virginia's top teams, Westfield High School.

Despite John Carrollbeing without two projected starters and team captain C.J. Skokowski (who missed day 2 of the tournament to take SATs),the Patriotsmanaged to place second to the host school.

"From the start, thefight wasfor second between, us, Spring Grove, North Lebanon and Blue Mountain," CoachKeith Watsonsaid. "It would'vetaken a miracle tofinish ahead of Solancowithout all our horses pulling the wagon."

The Patriots fell short individually as well, having four returning event champions, but able to only return one to the top of the podium. Hunter Ritter, 195, earned his third weight class title and the trophy for pinning five opponents in 4:23, collectively.

Placing second for the Patriots were Austin Smith, 138; Chris Almony, 170; and Christian Scott, 220.Zach Dwyer, 126, took third, while Luke Strappelli, 106, and Steve Jernigan, 145, each finished fourth.

Skokowski, 120, defaulted to fifth, with Mark Pickett, 160, placing sixth and Andy Miller, 152, taking eighth.

North Hagerstown dominates Aberdeen duals

The Hubs of North Hagerstown rolled through all five matches at Aberdeen's Golden Eagle Duals. The Hubs beat Bel Air, 59-12, and Marriotts Ridge, 59-7, on Friday. On Saturday, it was complete domination. The Hubs beat Aberdeen, 63-3; Fallston, 72-3; and Perryville, 78-0.

Bel Air won its other four matches to finish 4-1. The Bobcats wins came over Fallston, 54-16; Marriotts Ridge, 37-16; Perryville, 63-9; and Aberdeen, 48-20.

The Bobcats best finishers were David Reagan, 4-1 at 113; Tyler Ham, 3-2 at 120; Dulton Foster, 3-2 at 126; Brady Stafford, 4-1 at 132; Liam Bowers, 3-2 at 138; Cameron Watts, 5-0 at 152; Scott Miser, 4-1 at 160; Trevor Proctor, 3-2, at 170; Sam Queen, 4-1 at 182; Tom Gomez, 3-2 at 195; and Dakota Crawford, 5-0 at 285.

Fallston finished 2-3 with wins over Aberdeen, 45-33, and Perryville, 57-21. The other loss came against Marriotts Ridge, 52-21.

Fallston's top wrestlers were Donavyn Hohman, 5-0 at 120; Josh Ford, 4-1 at 106; Logan Ziervogel, 4-1 at 138; and Zack Kauffman, 4-1 at 145.

Host Aberdeen finished 1-4. The lone win came over Perryville, 54-24.

Huskies beat Indians

The Patterson Mill wrestling team opened its season with a big win Friday, knocking off host North East, 52-19. The Huskies won 10 of 14 weight classes, including the first six, to take full control of the meet.

Paul DiFonzo and Collin McDonald opened with back-to-back shutouts. DiFonzo won 6-0 at 120 pounds and McDonald followed with a 9-0 major decision at 126.

At 132, Brent Iwanowski started a string of pins, stopping Scott Butenewicz in 1:45. Jake Nikkila was even faster at 138, pinning Tony Nault in 1:03. Gavin Adams concluded the falls, decking Evan Martin in 2:47 at 145.

Juan Bustamante ended the Huskies run at 152, beating Tanner Moretz, 7-1.

Ven Widder, 170 (pin); Will Stamathis, 182 (forfeit); Joe King, 220 (forfeit); and Micheal Mass, 106 (pin) were also winners for Patterson Mill.

Tech wins tri-meet

In a three-team meet at Harford Tech on Friday, the Cobras beat both C. Milton Wright and Joppatowne.

Scores were 40-33 and 50-18, respectively. Double match winners for the Cobras were Zach Granese, 113; Andy Schwarz, 120; Jonathan Lechert, 132; Hunter Yoakum, 138-145; Josh Hucke, 170; and Wes Atteberry, 285.
