Veterans Day events planned around Harford County

Many around the country will take time Monday to recognize those who have served in the nation's military, and Harford County will be no exception.

A number of events around Harford County are planned in honor of Veterans Day, which recognizes all those who have been in the armed forces.

Havre de Grace will hold its annual ceremony starting at 9 a.m. with a prayer and recognition at Angel Hill Cemetery on Ohio Street.

That will be followed by a ceremony at Millard Tydings Park at 11 a.m., after which Joseph L. Davis American Legion Post 47 in the city will offer light fare.

In Aberdeen, a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at Parke and Rogers streets.

The event will feature an honor guard and wreath-laying ceremony, which is hosted by Bernard L. Tobin American Legion Post 128, VFW Post 10028, Fitzgerald Moore Catholic War Veterans Post 1841 and Korean War Veterans Post 271.

VFW Post 6054, on Spesutia Road in Perryman, will also have a free breakfast at 9:30 a.m.

In Bel Air, American Legion Post 39 will have a service at Bel Air Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m.

Some events will take place on days other than Monday.

The Harford County Detachment of the Marine Corps League will raise the Marine Corps flag Friday Nov. 8, at the county office building at Main Street and Baltimore Pike. The flag will be lowered on Monday.

Harford Community College will honor the military Tuesday during its 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. women's and men's basketball doubleheader with Delaware Tech. Harford Athletics will offer free admission for any military member with a military ID and their guest.

HCC will also honor its veteran and active military students at an appreciation event at 11 a.m. Thursday in the LaCalle Conference Room in Edgewood Hall, which will be followed by refreshments.

In Port Deposit on Sunday, the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 8185 will sponsor a flag retirement service in conjunction with the Sunday afternoon dinner visit by the veterans from Perry Point VA Hospital at the post home at 520 Susquehanna River Road.

Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. when the veterans arrive and music will be provided by DJ Bob Cross. At dusk, the guests will gather in the parking lot for a flag retirement ceremony conducted by auxiliary members with the assistance of Boy Scout Troop 143, followed by coffee and dessert. The public is invited to this free event.

The Jarrettsville Veterinary Center, run by two owners who are veterans, is offering free exams, nail trims and microchips to pets of veterans from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday. More information is available at jarrettsvillevet.com.
