Tech dominates in track hybrid event, the hurdle relay

The hurdle relay, a no-batons hybrid event of track and field, provided the highlights for hurdle-strong Harford Tech in its Cobra Relays last Friday. Tech won three relays over the hurdles.

The Tech girls won the 4x100 shuttle-hurdle relay with Alea Coleman, Ann Luna, Brianna McAllister and Kamryn Henderson running 1:00.81. They also won the 4x300-hurdles with Henderson, Luna, Samaiya Ellison, and Shannon Conlon combining for a 3:28.8.

The team of Derick Logan, Darnell Pink, Donte Evans, and Marcus Clifton won the boys' 110-meter sprint/shuttle hurdle relay in 1:00.25. Logan, Evans, Pink, and Ullic Young-Briscoe won a fourth relay, one without hurdles, the 4x100.

They clocked 44.69, edging by 0.27 the Havre de Grace team of Matt Chin, Josh Penn, Kodi Rupe, and Tyler Hartman. The same Havre de Grace foursome won the 4x200, edging Tech in 1:34.42.

Tech won five of the meet's 30 events. C. Milton Wright and South Carroll also won five each. Nine schools competed.

Performance Highlights

Jessica Rogers returned to racing Tuesday, five months after sustaining an avulsion fracture in a cross-country meet. The CMW freshman matched strides in the 800 with teammate Pam Koga in a tri-meet. They raced to a near dead heat, with Koga winning by a tenth in 2:26.0.

Langston Gash out-kicked North Harford's Nick Fransham in the 3,200 at Edgewood Tuesday, setting what is believed to be an Edgewood school record. The two ran the first 1,600 in 5:12, then Gash finished with a 4:44, taking the lead with 300 to go and winning by 1 second in 9:56.2. Gash was also part of Edgewood's 4x800 relay team, which won in 8:31.9.

Earlier in the meet, Fransham won the 1600 in 4:34.4, beating Edgewood's David Dzambasow by 3.6 seconds.

Bel Air freshman Kieran McDermott ran 10:04.0 in his first-ever 3,200-meter race March 24, beating Dzambasow by 8 seconds.

Two of the top sprinters in the county – Christina Riggins and Qalea Ismail — met in the 100 dash in the tri-meet at CMW Tuesday. Riggins won in 12.4 by 0.2 over the Patterson Mill senior. In the same meet, Matt Riggins won the dash double in 11.2 and 23.2. Also for the Mustangs, Kenny King ran 52.5 to win the boys' 400, and Sydney Gray, 1:02.0, the girls 400.

Cierra Reid won the 100 in 13.4, the long jump at 15-4 and the triple jump at 32-8 in a tri-meet at Fallston Tuesday, leading Aberdeen to a win. Her teammate Taylor Cole doubled in the shot put and discus at 32-9 1/2 and 92-5 1/2.

Andrew Parks led the Fallston boys to a 101-78 win over Aberdeen. The junior won the 800 in 2:03.7, edging Aberdeen's Gavin Brennan, 2:05.2. Parks also won the 1,600 in 4:52.1.

Aberdeen got strong doubles from Kion Gibson, Karl Lyons, and Mark Meynisse at Fallston. Gibson won the 110 hurdles in 15.2 and 300 hurdles in 43.5. Lyons took the triple jump at 39-7 and long jump at 19-6 1/2. Mark Meynisse won the 100 in 11.4 and 200 in 23.3.

Among the pole-vaulters, Bel Air's Jake Davenport opened the season clearing 11 feet March 24. Fallston's Scott McGill cleared 10 feet to win Tuesday's meet at Fallston.
