Matt Riggins' bid for a state title in the 55-meter dash ended about one foot short of victory Monday in the MPSSAA Class 3A State Indoor Track and Field Meet in Landover.
The C. Milton Wright senior finished second in the dash, 2 hundredths behind winner Glen Taylor of Atholton. Riggins was timed automatically in 6.50 seconds.
His sister, Christina Riggins, a CMW sophomore, placed sixth in the girls' 55. She finished in 7.31, as one-tenth of a second separated places two through six.
Jeremy Middlebrooks led the Edgewood boys to a 16th place finish in 3A. He placed fourth in the 300 in 36.05 and sixth in the 55 in 6.69.
Langston Gash was the other individual scorer for the Rams. He took fourth in the 3200, covering 16 laps of the Prince George's Sportsplex track in 9:58.24.
Earlier, Gash teamed with David Dzambasow, Sam Verk and Aaron Parker in the 4x800 relay. The team finished fourth in 8:23 but was one of two teams disqualified for a baton infraction just past the finish line. Dzambasow finished ninth in the 1600 in 4:51.58 after his 2:03 split on the 4x800 relay.
In the Class 1A state meet held Feb.16, Elliott Scott of Havre de Grace scored in two field events. The junior cleared 9 feet in the pole vault and 5-4 in the high jump, placing sixth in both.
