Matt and Christina Riggins raced to twin wins in the 55-meter dash in the Essex Indoor Invitational Saturday in Baltimore, six days after winning a similar sibling double in Washington, D.C.
Christina, a C. Milton Wright sophomore, won the girls dash in 7.60 seconds on the Essex track. Matt, a senior, won boys dash in 6.77.
The two won the 55 dashes in the Sportsplex Track Showcase in Landover Jan. 4, with Matt running 6.28 and Christina, 7.03, the fastest dash times among Maryland preps this season, according to athletic.net.
On the 160-meter Essex track, Christina also won the 300, clocking 44.39. Matt finished second in the 300, 1.09 seconds behind Edgewood's Jeremy Middlebrooks, who won with a strong kick in 37.17.
Five Harford high schools were represented in the Essex field of 14 girls teams and 11 boys teams. Harford athletes won 16 of the 24 events. Edgewood led the boys team scoring with John Carroll second. The Patriots finished second in the girls scoring behind Mount de Sales.
Adria Pirozzi led the John Carroll girls by winning the 3200 in 12:49.66 and the 1600 in 5:58.76, the latter 10 seconds ahead of Fallston's Lindsay Howard. The Patriots also got wins from Holly Driver in the 55 hurdles in 9.62, Kelley Reilley in the 500 in 1:31.77 and the 4x800 team in 11:05.
The John Carroll boys won two events. Evan Moore took the 1600 in 4:49.25 ahead of Edgewood's David Dzambasow (4:53.52). The Patriots' won the 4x400 in 4:02.48.
For Harford Tech, Shannon Conlon won the girls 800 in 2:45.28 and Josh Duvall, the boys shot put at 30-4 1/2.
J.T. Klopcic of CMW won the boys 500 in 1:15.32. Bo Manor's Ty Franks lapped the field in the 3200, winning in 10:20.36.
Edgewood won two relays, the 4x800 in 9:15.33 and the 4x160 in 1:20.74. In the 4x160, Middlebrooks overtook Fallston anchorman Corey Madigan with 50 meters to go to win by 0.72 second.
