The C. Milton Wright softball team flexed a little tournament muscle Monday, sweeping a pair of games at Bachman Park in the Anne Arundel County Invitational.
The Mustangs opened with a 10-0, five-inning win over Atholton and concluded with an 11-3 win over Howard. The wins improved the Mustangs to 6-1.
In the win over Atholton, CMW freshman pitcher Katie Murphy won her second game in as many outings.
Murphy held the Raiders to two hits while striking out seven. In two starts, Murphy has yet to allow an earned run.
Her battery-mate, catcher Danielle DeAgostino, led the offense with a pair of doubles in three trips to the plate. Cat Kim was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and a stolen base.
Caroline Weimer added one hit and an RBI sacrifice fly, finishing with three RBIs.
Emily Luzetsky added one hit and two stolen bases and Murphy aided her cause with a double and RBI.
In beating Howard, CMW scored in five of six at bats, highlighted a four-run fifth and a three-run sixth.
Morghan Fulton earned the win, scattering four hits and striking out four.
Kim fueled the win, banging out two hits, including the first home run of her high school career, a three-run shot.
Weimer, who also homered, was one of three Mustangs with three hits. Luzetsky and Katelyn Long also had three hits each. Murphy added two hits and two RBIs.
Hawks split two
Other scores from Monday saw North Harford split its two games at Bachman Park. The Hawks (4-3) were edged by Howard, 3-2, but rebounded to beat Atholton, 7-6.
Mustangs blank Panthers
C. Milton Wright added its second big UCBAC Chesapeake Division win in two days Thursday, blanking Perryville, 9-0.
Mustangs pitcher Morghan Fulton was in control again, shutting down the Perryville offense on four hits and two walks. She struck out two.
The Mustangs drew first blood in the bottom of the first when Emily Luzetsky had a leadoff walk. She moved to second on a passed ball and to third on the only error of the game.Cat Kim then put the ball in play and Luzetsky raced to the plate.
The Mustangs (3-1 league, 4-1 overall) flashed a little defense in the third. Perryville's Lydia Hill singled into left field, but was quickly erased when CMW first baseman Caroline Weimer snagged a line drive and then dove to the base to double up Hill.
The defense stepped up again in the fourth when third baseman Jenny Lynch made a diving grab that likely could have scored the tie run. Lynch, from her knees, retired the batter at first to end the inning.
Leading 1-0, CMW scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
The Panthers (2-2, 2-2) had another small threat in the seventh, but Fulton got the Mustangs out of the inning with the shutout win.
Cobras lose first game
Harford Tech (4-1) gave away six unearned runs Thursday and it cost the Cobras their first loss. Tech committed seven errors, out-hit host Rising Sun, 13-3, but came up short on the scoreboard, losing, 6-5, in non-division play.
Kim Cook was the losing pitcher, throwing six innings with six strikeouts.
Offensively, Maddie Forsythe tripled and Ashley Leavens doubled.
Lexi Barclay had two doubles for Rising Sun.
Rams win again
Edgewood (2-2, 2-3) won its second straight Susquehanna Division game Thursday, beating host Aberdeen, 7-2.
Sophomore pitcher Amanda Sullivan struck out three batters and held the Eagles (2-3, 2-4) scoreless through five innings.
Julia Gatch led the Edgewood offense, going 3-for-4, reaching once on an error and scoring two runs.
Hawks edge Cougars
North Harford (3-2) and Fallston (1-5) hooked up in a hard-fought, tight non-division game Thursday, eventually won by the visiting Hawks, 2-1.
Fallston banged out seven hits, but fell short. Ivey Wagner and Anna Wagner had two hits each to pace the Cougars.
Warriors beat Elks
Havre de Grace (2-3) won its second game, beating visiting Elkton, 11-4, in non-division action.
Olivia DuBois led the offense, going 4-for-5 with four singles, three runs scored and an RBI.
Kateri Peters went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs scored and Annelise Beer added two hits (double) with three RBIs and a run scored.
Sara Crawford, Samara White and Addie Richardson also had hits.
Beer pitched the complete game win, striking out eight and allowing four unearned runs on four hits.
