Harford deputy escapes serious injury in head-on crash Friday

A Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy sergeant received minor injuries when his police vehicle was involved in head-on crash Friday night at an intersection north of Bel Air.

Sgt. Al Dais, who is assigned to the Sheriff's Office Northern Precinct in Jarrettsville, was on duty and driving an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria along Route 543 toward the Hickory Bypass around 10:40 p.m. Friday when an "unknown vehicle" ran the red light at the intersection, Lt. Michael Crabbs, a Sheriff's Office spokesman, said.

The accident scene is several miles north of the center of Bel Air.

Crabbs said another nearby driver swerved to avoid the vehicle running the red light and struck Dais' vehicle head on.

Despite the severity of the crash, Dais had minor injuries and did not require medical attention at the scene, according to Crabbs.

The driver whose vehicle hit Dais' was not injured, Crabbs said.
