Several Harford County runners found a shady course in Southern Maryland for a mid-summer ultra-marathon July 21. The trip to Upper Marlboro for the Rosaryville 50K and 25K netted some age-group awards.
Matthew Burdette of Churchville led the Harford finishers in the 50K. He placed fifth overall in the field of 73, covering 31 miles on a single-track dirt trail in 4 hours, 39 minutes. He took third place in the 30-39 age group.
David Stevenson of Abingdon finished 10th in the 50K field in 5:04:12 and Tom Gamber of Abingdon was 30th in 6:04:15. Lisa Gesualdo of Bel Air took third in the women's 40-49 age group in 6:32:15. She was 12th among the women.
Described by one runner as a "nice race but intolerably hot", the event drew 243 runners among races of four distances.
In the 25K, Susan Kemen of Bel Air was the runner-up among women 50 to 59 in 3:11:31. Kirk Ingold of Bel Air placed fourth in 40-49 in 2:47:12 and Dawn Clayson of Bel Air was fifth in 40-49 in 3:03:45. Kyle Vaughn of Forest Hill ran 3:07:03 for 14th in 30-39.
Cricket 5K
Bob Becker of White Hall outran a strong field in the 60-and-over age group in the Cricket 5K in Baltimore July 21.
Becker, 61, finished 10th among 189 runners in 19:54 to win his age group by exactly 1 minute over Bob Burns of Columbia. Ronnie Wong of Baltimore was third in 21:41.
Among the women, Megan McNew, winner of the race previously, finished second in 19:31 behind Megan DiGregorio, who ran 18:42. Chris Mills of Arlington, Va., led the men in 15:57.
Sunset Challenge Triathlon
Jose Delp of Whiteford led the women's 55-59 age group in the Sunset Challenge Triathlon in Vineland, N.J., July 27.
She raced through a quarter-mile swim, 13-mile bike and 5K run in 1 hour, 31 minutes to win her age group by a 15-minute margin.
George Stewart of Bel Air earned the first-place award in the lightly competed 70-74 age group. He averaged 19.8 mph on the bike before finishing in 1:35:27.
In other races
Terri Broemm, 61, of Bel Air, finished first in the 60-69 age group in the Hadassah Check it Out Challenge 8K in Towson Sunday. She ran 48:47 over a 4.97-mile course. Mirek Havel of Bel Air took first in the under-16 age group in 38:36, placing 11th overall. Maurice Pointer, 58, of Baltimore, led all 111 finishers in the 8K in 27:26, and Maureen Hall of Baltimore led the women in 35:55.
Dom Corson of Bel Air placed 10th in 200-meter dash in his age group at the National Senior Games in Cleveland July 27. Corson, 52, ran 27.84 seconds, missing the finals by two places. He also competed in the 100 dash, running 13.67 seconds.
Jeff Burger and Kevin Hennessey finished in a tie in the RASAC Over the River 5.7-miler Sunday in 46:27. Christine Trzcinski won the women's race in 52:38 with Andi Miller second in 62:02.
Edgar Narciso and Moira McGill were winners in the RASAC Winding Trail 5K on the Little Gunpowder Trail July 14. Narciso ran 29:48 to finish 1 minute ahead of Kirk Ingold, the runner-up. McGill ran 37:02, with Hannah Fitzpatrick second in 37:23.
Rob Stevenson led the men, and Christine Trzinski, the women, in the RASAC Hot to Trot 3.4-mile race July 21. Stevenson ran 23:12 to win by 9 seconds over Zac Huffman. Trzinski was timed in 24:42. Adria Pirozzi was second among the women in 26:08.
