Muse, in running shoes, shuffles to Red Shoe 5K win

Tyler Muse left 1,559 runners far behind Sunday in the Fourth Annual Red Shoe Shuffle 5K in Baltimore.

The 21-year-old Bel Air resident finished more than 2 minutes ahead of the nearest challenger in winning the race for the second time. He finished first in 2013 and was second last year in this 5K to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.He ran 15:55 Sunday, 51 seconds faster than last year, and won by 500 meters.

Several other Harford runners competed. Gwen Branscom, 24, of Pylesville, finished 10th among the women in 21:45. Marie Chamberlain of Forest Hill (25:20) and Sandra Carrig of Abingdon (29:43) finished 1-2 in the over-60 age group.

Great Co-Mission 5K

Alex Loper took a brief pause in his marathon training to race a 5K in Joppatowne Saturday. He won the Great Co-Mission 5K at Mariner Point Park in 17:26, finishing 2 1/2 minutes ahead of the field.

Jeanette Goetz, director of the race, was first among the women in 23:00 and fourth overall in the field of 71. Finishing in the women's top five were Mercedes Pinkney, 23:22; Julianna Stevens, 24:18; Marge Rosasco, 24:58; and Gracie Goetz, 25:13.

In the men's top five were Firuz Etemad-Moghadam, 20:11; Gianni Perfetti, 22:00; Mark Rosasco, 24:58; and Jeff Jenkins, 25:36.

Cherry Blossom 10-Miler

Three Harford runners raced to top-10 age-group finishes Sunday in the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in Washington, D.C. – a race shortened to 9.39 miles by a pedestrian-auto accident just before 18,000 runners gathered at the starting line.

Rob Tisch ran 56:30 to place ninth among men 40 to 44. His extrapolated 10-mile time was 1:00:12. Mirek Havel, 16, ran 1:01:50 for eighth place in his age group. Esther Buchser was sixth among women 65 to 69 in 1:26:24.

About 50 Harford runners competed. Other top finishers in their respective age groups were Janet McAdorey, 19th, 1:16:55; Jennifer Drabo, 68th, 1:13:13; Andrew Wilson, 31st, 59:42; Keith Burgess, 28th, 1:15:05; Karen Henry, 74th, 1:24:10; Meghan McAdorey, 95th, 1:15:06.

In other races

Dan Kelly overtook early leader Rob Tisch on the bike and proceeded to win the RASAC Spring Duathlon Saturday in 1:31:13 in Churchville. Heather Hoffman led the women's race all the way over a 5K run, 17.7-mile bike and 5K run, finishing in 1:50:00. Emily Burdeshaw was second in 2:16:06.

Alex Mateo of Abingdon placed second among 88 runners in the St. Joseph School 5K in Kingsville Sunday in 19:37. He finished 17 seconds behind winner Jay Weir. Ian Fink and Joshua Fink of Churchville finished third and sixth, respectively, in 20:35 and 22:47.

George Weber of Abingdon was fourth overall in 22:00 and first in 50-59 in the LOGjam 5K in Ellicott City Saturday.

Edgar Narciso (44:38) and Danielle Stout (55:35) were winners in the RASAC Jerusalem Mill race of just over 5 miles Sunday in Joppa.
