A Havre de Grace man died and three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 40 at Robin Hood Road between Havre de Grace and Aberdeen late Friday night, Maryland State Police said.
Jarvis Doane, 57, of the 100 block of Spring Lake Way, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital following the accident, which was reported at about 11:19 p.m., according to a State Police news release.
Mr. Doane was driving a blue Ford Taurus east on Route 40 when his vehicle was struck by a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country minivan, driven by Conrad Carter, 51, of the 300 block of Seattle Slew Place in Havre de Grace, according to the news release.
The Chrysler was behind the taxi in the right hand lane and crashed into the back of the taxi at a high rate of speed, Sgt. Joseph Comer, of the State Police Bel Air Barrack, said.
The back of the cab was severely crushed, Comer said.
The taxi ended up between the median and the fast lane, but did not hit anything else, he said. The Chrysler hit a guardrail on the right-hand side.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling eastbound on Pulaski Highway and for unknown reasons the 2010 Town and Country struck the Ford Taurus which was accelerating from the intersection traffic signal," the news release states.
Mr. Doane and Carter were both taken to University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital, where Mr. Doane died. Carter sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, Sgt. Joseph Comer, of the State Police Bel Air Barrack, said.
Comer said Mr. Doane's Taurus was being operated as a taxicab.
A passenger in the Chrysler, Adriante S. Carter, 27, of the same address as the driver, was also transported by ambulance to Harford Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Comer said.
A passenger in the taxi, Amanda Panuela Swain, 22, of the 300 block of Whitney Court in Havre de Grace, was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to Comer.
Swain was listed in good condition at Shock Trauma on Sunday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said.
