Motorists driving along Aberdeen's Route 22, from I-95 to the Aberdeen Proving Ground gate, have been funneled through a busy construction area in recent weeks, as State Highway Administration contractors have begun widening the highway and improving three intersections.
Jersey barriers have been set up along both sides of Route 22 in the intersection with Beards Hill Road and Middleton Lane.
The work is part of SHA's $21.7 million package of BRAC-related improvements in the Route 22 and Route 40 areas of Harford County.
The project got under way during the spring of 2014 with the razing of 18 homes along Route 22 that sat on property the SHA determined was needed for the widening and intersection improvements.
All construction is expected to be completed by the spring of 2017.
According to the SHA, the project will add two through-lanes at the intersection with Beards Hill Road, add a left-turn lane from Route 22 to Beards Hill Road and widen the Route 22 median east of the intersection.
On Beards Hill Road, a raised median will be built and the existing single left-turn lanes will be widened to double left-turn lanes.
The Beards Hill Road portion of the project should be completed by the spring of 2016, the SHA said.
At the Paradise Road intersection, a third through-lane will be added and the right-turn lane lengthened from Route 22 to Route 462 for northbound traffic.
On Route 462, two double left-turn lanes will be created and separate right-turn lanes added for southbound traffic going to Route 22.
At the Old Post Road intersection, a left-turn lane will be added for eastbound Route 22 traffic heading north to Old Post Road.
