As hard as it is to believe, the spring sports season, the regular part of it that is, is over.
Playoffs started Wednesday for boys and girls lacrosse teams and continued Thursday for softball and Friday for baseball. Tennis and track and field athletes will also participate in postseason events as we move forward.
This regular season, though, had a few results that stuck out in my mind. That is, how the division titles were won.
I'll start with baseball and the Chesapeake Division of the UCBAC. This was one crazy season.
It started off with an upset or two and that didn't change as the season rolled along. It took until Monday for the champion to be determined and that team was Rising Sun. The Tigers beat North Harford on Monday, which eliminated the Hawks from title contention. Fallston, however, was right there. The Cougars and Tigers were both 8-4 in the division and both had beaten the other. So, it came down to common opponents each played, out of the division. There were two and as fate might have it, Rising Sun won both of those games by one run and Fallston lost both, also by one run.
Probably a proper ending to a really up and down, but tightly contested division.
Both UCBAC softball divisions were interesting.
In the Chesapeake, it shaped up to be a three team race between C. Milton Wright, Bel Air and Bo Manor. Bel Air put itself at the top, despite the pair of losses to CMW. The Bobcats two wins over Bo Manor within a week locked out the Eagles. CMW's win in the final week over Bo Manor kept the Mustangs alive.
The Mustangs, though, had three losses and two of them came against North Harford. Despite CMW's wins over Bel Air, the Bobcats had just those two losses and appeared destined to win the division.
Enter North Harford. The Hawks had one more upset in mind and the 4-0 win at Bel Air gave the title to CMW.
In the Susquehanna, what else can be said about the Harford Tech club? The Cobras overcame the shocking death of coach Gary Siler and under the direction of Tom Bowler, stayed the course. The Cobras won all but two games in the division and finished 12-2 as the champions.
The lacrosse divisions in both boys and girls offered few surprises. CMW won the girls Chesapeake title, but a last second goal to beat Bel Air might have been the biggest goal of the regular season.
Havre de Grace girls dominated the Susquehanna Division, but the Warriors still have to find a way to beat the Chesapeake teams that linger in the region playoffs.
Harford Tech won the Susquehanna boys title, but not without delay. Seriously, the Cobras title run was delayed several days when lightning halted play in the key division battle with Perryville. The game was tied at 7 when play was halted and when it resumed, Tech scored the only goal and with it, won the title.
In the Chesapeake, there was no surprise to see Fallston win another championship. What may surprise many is that Havre de Grace was the Cougars toughest opponent. Through three quarters of their league game, Havre de Grace led the Cougars. Fallston showed its resilience and won with a fourth quarter comeback.
If results come as expected, we will have a couple of intriguing games on Monday.
CMW will visit Bel Air for a third time in softball and Havre de Grace will travel to Fallston for a rematch in boys lacrosse. There are other big games, but these two really stick out.
