When you should just stay in bed or get back in it (Commentary)

You know, there are just some days when staying in bed, or getting back in it, seem to be a better option than some others.

That could be said for me Thursday as I tried to get myself headed in the direction that allows me to do just this, write this column.

So, before I have gotten out of bed, I have a text from my wife about her Bluetooth and a warning of the MSP set up over the hill past John Carroll. That didn't surprise me as it seems Thursday is the common day for that speed check to be happening there and a few other places I travel around the county.

So, having forgotten to hit Rite Aid yesterday for some Prilosec, I needed to make that trip this morning, before coming on up the road.

Short story there is, I tried to get my buying done the other day, but the card system was down and like most of us, I don't have a lot of cash on me anymore.

OK, so I get squared away at Rite Aid, make my way home and then get the dreaded buzz of my cell phone in my pocket. It's a missed call from my stepdaughter, Annelise. Trust me, it could only mean one thing. Something was left at home and could I deliver it. I was absolutely right.

There's a lunch sitting on the dining room table. So, now I'm headed out of my way a second time to make the delivery. Annelise is actually a pretty good kid, so my BP didn't rise too much.

With the lunch where it belonged, I turned my focus on getting to Bel Air, but my route of travel was slightly different.

A left off Juniata Street put me on what becomes Route 155 and up the hill I went. Sticking at a safe and legal speed, I approached the turn I have made numerous times, the turn that takes me to Meadowvale Elementary School.

I wasn't turning there, so my speed was still steady, and just then, something is coming into my vision from the left and it's not stopping. Thankfully, it wasn't a deer.

It was a wild turkey. Yes, a wild turkey and thankfully again, just one. I braked and it kept coming. I braked harder and eventually it braked, too. It stopped, turned and went back across the road from where it came, safely.

Now my BP is probably starting to rise. I shouldn't have even been on that road, let alone having a near miss with a wild turkey.

My wife teases that I'm the Steve Irwin of Havre de Grace. I would not go that far, but wildlife does have a special place in my heart and brain, much the way sports do.

As for sports, it was an interesting week to say the least. Despite this on and off again crappy weather, a good number of games and matches have been played.
