Harford County Public Schools has announced several year-end administrative appointments, among them new principals for eight schools, including Homestead-Wakefield Elementary in Bel Air and Halls Cross Roads Elementary in Aberdeen, where the principals were removed earlier this year without explanation from the school system.
The changes take effect July 1.
HCPS officials have also confirmed the retirements of James Jewell, who as assistant superintendent for business services has been the school system's chief finance officer, and of Ken Zorbach, supervisor of high school physical education and interscholastic athletics.
Deborah Basler has been named as Zorbach's successor. No replacement has been named for Jewell.
Four other central office administrative appointments were announced: Heather Moorefield, coordinator of teacher instruction; Melissa Surgeon, coordinator of Title I; Brian McNutt, assistant supervisor of facilities management; and Kimberly Manzo, coordinator of special education.
Christopher Cook has been named principal at Homestead-Wakefield, replacing Dale Hunsinger, whom HCPS says is "on leave." Hunsinger led the school for 17 years.
A group of Homestead-Wakefield parents and friends of Hunsinger packed the June 1 school board meeting, where complaints were made that the school community was being kept in the dark about Hunsinger's abrupt replacement. HCPS leadership and the board members refused to comment.
Joining Cook on the Homestead-Wakefield leadership team are Mark Warfield, 12-month assistant principal, and Kathleen Fairley, 10-month assistant principal.
Ayn Ford has been named principal at Halls Cross Roads, replacing Gwendolyn Benjamin-Jones, whom school officials said went on leave earlier this spring and has since returned as an instructional facilitator.
According to HCPS, Benjamin-Jones will continue as an instructional facilitator at multiple locations next school year. Rebecca Reese also has been appointed an instructional facilitator at multiple locations.
R. Bradley Stinar, appointed principal at Hickory Elementary in March, will continue in that post next school year, as will Hickory's 10-month assistant principal Nicole Nimmo, who also was appointed to her position in March.
