Shawn Waters, Pamela Turner and two teenage sons, who lived in the two-story, middle-of-the-group townhouse, owned by Koon Yu, had left about 45 minutes before the fire was discovered, according to a notice of investigation from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The fire started in the kitchen, where it was contained, according to the notice. The entire home, which sustained extensive smoke, soot and water damage, suffered an estimated $50,000 in damage to the structure and $25,000 to the contents.

About 25 firefighters from Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company and assisting fire companies from Abingdon, Joppa-agnolia and Fallston got the fire under control in about 10 minutes.

The family is being assisted by Harford County Disaster Assistance and the American Red Cross.
