More high temps forecast for Harford, emergency teams respond to some heat-related calls

Temperatures in Harford County and the rest of the region could reach 100 degrees Monday, with the National Weather Service also warning heat index values could hit 109 degrees.A heat-releated emergency call was reported Monday morning around 9:15 at Kohl's distribution center in the Edgewood area, according to a county government spokesperson Cindy Mumby. She did not have additional details.Andrew Doyle, spokesperson for the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, which responded, confirmed the call was heat-related and said the patient was in stable condition at a hospital.Harford fire and EMS companies also handled three heat-related calls over the weekend, and county and local health officials continue to advise residents to take precautions against dehydration and heat stroke.On Monday, Harford County library branches will again serve as cooling centers during normal business hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at all branches except for Darlington. (Bryna Zumer and Max Simpson / BSMG)All were taken to local hospitals, Chenworth said.All three people were outside but she had no further information on what they were doing.According to the Harford County Health Department, heat illness takes many forms including heat fatigue, heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps, heat exhaustion or the most serious, heat stroke.Heat stroke is an advanced form of heat stress that occurs when the body is overwhelmed by heat and unable to control its temperature.Anyone with a body temperature above 104 degrees is likely suffering from heat stroke and may have symptoms of confusion, combativeness, strong rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry flushed skin, faintness, staggering, possible delirium or coma. People with any of these symptoms, especially older adults, should receive immediate medical attention.This story will be updated.
