A medic unit en route to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air with a patient was involved in an accident with another vehicle on Route 24 not far from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, police and fire and rescue officials said.
The crash snarled traffic moving into Bel Air along busy Route 24, according to Maryland State Police.
The accident occurred around 3:40 p.m. when the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company medic unit struck another vehicle on northbound Route 24 at West Ring Factory Road, which is less than a mile south of the hospital, according to the Harford Volunteer Fire and EMS Association's media Facebook page.
One person from the accident was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the association. A second medic unit was requested at the scene to the transport of the first patient could be completed.
Northbound Route 24 was closed at the intersection immediately following the accident.
Shortly before 5 p.m., one of the two travel lanes had reopened, but traffic was moving slowly and motorists were still being advised to avoid the area.
"It's a real mess there," Cpl. Dudek, the duty officer at the State Police Bel Air Barrack, said.
Troopers were still at the scene investigating, and Dudek said he did not have any additional information.
