With a large pile of fresh mulch to be spread and a few flower beds in need of a attention at Magnolia Elementary School, 15 volunteers from local businesses, nonprofits and county government dug in for the United Way of Central Maryland's Day of Action on Wednesday.Day of Action is an annual community service focused on providing area residents with education, health programs and housing and income, according to United Way of Central Maryland.The Volunteers cleaned out the flower beds, pulling weeds and other debris out and spread fresh mulch in the area in front of the school."The volunteers are here to help the school and families and show their support for the community," said Tammy Warner, case manager for the Magnolia Elementary School Family Stability Program.Magnolia Elementary, a federal Title 1 school where more than 90 percent of the student body is below the poverty level, is also the site of United Way of Central Maryland's newest Family Stability Center, which aims to empower families to become self-sufficient by focusing on the building blocks of a better life: Education, employment, housing and health, according to United Way."The program works with families that are in danger of becoming homeless and in very unstable places in their lives financially, we work with them to help bring stability to their home and keep their children in their school so they aren't bouncing from school to school," Warner explained.Since opening in July, the Magnolia Elementary Family Stability Center has helped eight families avoid eviction, keeping the children in those families stable in their schools, the organization said.Day of Action took place at more than 43 sites across central Maryland with approximately 450 volunteers from 31 companies and community groups participating.
