Sheryl Davis Kohl, a former state delegate, will be joining the Harford County Liquor Control Board on April 1, after her appointment was approved by the Harford County Council Tuesday night.

Kohl, who has long been active in Harford County Republican Party politics, will replace Sandi Tunney, a liquor board member since 2006 and the fire-member board's chairwoman since 2013.

The all-Republican council voted unanimously for Kohl's appointment, which was made by County Executive Barry Glassman and also had to be approved by Harford's state senators and delegates.

Tunney did not seek another term, Cindy Mumby, the county executive's spokesperson, said Wednesday.

"Mr. Glassman had asked her to continue and thought she was doing a good job," Mumby said. "He is grateful for her service."

Kohl attended Tuesday's council meeting, where Councilman Chad Shrodes thanked Tunney, who has been serving as the board's chairwoman, for her service.

"I think Sheryl Davis Kohl would be an excellent pick for this position. I think she is very fair-minded and I think that is a trait that is important to have on the liquor control board," Shrodes said.

Council President Richard Slutzky said he has known Kohl for some time, and if anyone is more active in the Harford County community, "I am not sure who it is."

Slutzky said it is impressive that she could add another responsibility to her list, one that would be "probably daunting to many of us."

Kohl is founder and president of Aberdeen-based Beacon Staffing Alternatives, which specializes in administrative staffing, IT staffing and logistics support, according to its website.

In addition to her activities in local Republican politics, Kohl also previously served on the Bainbridge Development Advisory Board and has been active with numerous business groups and other local organizations and boards.

Kohl was appointed to a vacant seat in the House of Delegates in 2005, representing southern Harford County. She served until January 2007, after she unsuccessfully ran for a full term the previous fall. She also was an unsuccessful county council candidate in 2010.

Members of the Harford liquor board serve three year terms and receive an annual salary of $6,000. The board chairperson, who is selected by the members, receives $7,000 annually.
