A new sub sandwich shop is set to open in Bel Air Plaza on Wednesday.
The shopping center on Baltimore Pike will be the third Maryland location for Jersey Mike's Subs, Harold Wood, director of operations for the franchise, said. He oversaw the openings of Jersey Mike's Subs restaurants in Timonium and Owings Mills last year.
"We wanted to be in Bel Air for a while," Wood, who lives in Timonium, said, noting the central Harford County area has "a lot of growth, a lot of business."
Jersey Mike's, which launched in Point Pleasant, N.J., in 1956, has 1,500 restaurants open and under development nationwide.
The grand opening on Wednesday will include a fundraiser offering customers with coupons a free regular sub for a minimum $1 contribution to Cool Kids Campaign.
The Cool Kids Campaign is devoted to improving the quality of life for pediatric oncology patients and their families by focusing on the academic, social and emotional needs brought on by a cancer diagnosis. Champion figure skater and Bel Air resident Kimmie Meissner is one of the non-profit organization's co-founders.
Jersey Mike's slices sandwiches to order, offers subs topped off with "the juice," a red-wine vinegar and olive oil blend, roasts its own roast beef and promises "top-notch service," Wood said.
The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will hire 15 to 20 employees.
Wood said people have been stopping by and asking when the restaurant will start officially selling subs.
