Aberdeen wins second straight behind good pitching, timely hitting

Following Tuesday night's first win, the Aberdeen IronBirds (2-4) made it two in a row Wednesday, beating homestanding Vermont, 3-1, in New York-Penn League action. The victory gave the IronBirds their first series win.

Trevor Sprowl (2-for-4), seeing his first action of the season at second base, had a big night. Sprowl singled in the IronBirds' first run in the second and he also singled in the second run in the fourth.

Steve Laurino, who also had two hits and two runs scored, tripled and scored an insurance run in the ninth. Jerry McClanahan collected the RBI with an one-out single.

Vermont's lone run came in the seventh off of reliever Kevin Grendell, who pitched three innings for the win. Jean Cosme started and pitched four scoreless innings and Elias Pinales pitched the final two innings for the save.

Break up the IronBirds

Aberdeen broke into the win column for the first time this season on Tuesday, beating host Vermont, 12-10, in a wild New York-Penn League game.

Both teams scored three runs in the first and Aberdeen (1-4) seemingly took control in the sixth, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring eight runs. Vermont added a pair of runs in the sixth as well, but Aberdeen led, 11-5, through seven innings.

The lead grew to 12-5 as Aberdeen scored a run in the eighth, but Vermont (1-4) made it interesting by posting five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Aberdeen pitcher Caleb Kellogg pitched a scoreless ninth to put Aberdeen in the win column.

Randy Gassaway led the 'Birds 17-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Cedric Mullins added three hits and a pair of RBIs, while Ademar Rifaela, Austin Pfeiffer, Steve Laurino and Ricardo Andujar each had two hits. Pfeiffer also had three RBIs.

Tanner Scott, the second of five Aberdeen pitchers, earned the win.

Looking ahead

Aberdeen is scheduled to begin a three-game series at Lowell Thursday, before returning to Ripken Stadium Sunday for game one of three against Batavia. Sunday's game is set for 5:35 p.m. McNamara Division rival Staten Island comes in for three starting July 1.
