Patterson Mill Middle School students raised just more than $25,000 for the American Heart Association with its Hoops for Heart event last week.
The event features a students versus teachers basketball game and select teachers "taking one for the team," like Brian Lehman, who became a human sundae, Matt Roseland, who got a new hairstyle from students who shaved a reverse Mohawk on his head, and Carrie Holloway and Shawn Vallowe, who became human hot dogs, complete with lots of ketchup and mustard.
The program is a service learning project put on by the middle school health and physical education department to help raise awareness among students about heart disease while promoting healthy living through activities like basketball to go along with the Hoops for Heart theme.
The school's Husky mascot was on hand to get the crowd on its feet and cheering and was joined by the Chick-Fil-A Cow, the Oriole Bird and Poe from the Baltimore Ravens.
Top fundraisers in sixth grade were Elijah Doyle, $525, Mary Pohlenz, $253, and Abby Shefcheck, $175; seventh grade, Nyia Spellen, $385, Karina Simpson, $300, and Tyler Dinatale, $200; and eighth grade, Sarah McCollom, $2,032, Zach Miller, $1,800, and Callie Barnett, $450.
