The Historical Society of Harford County will once again open its doors for a free open house to be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at the society's Bel Air headquarters.
The event, called "Harford History on Parade," is the second held by the society to build public awareness of the society's collection of artifacts, photographs and other resources about Harford's history, culture, genealogy and economy.
The society's collection of historic photographs and resource materials tells the story of Harford County from pre-colonial to contemporary times and is considered the most comprehensive such collection under one roof.
The first Harford History on Parade open house held a year ago drew about 200 people, a society spokesperson said, noting that many who attended were highly complimentary of the program.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the society headquarters in the old post office building at 143 N. Main St. in Bel Air. For information, call 410-838-7691.
There is ample free parking behind the building and on adjacent streets. The society's gift shop, which features a number of books by local authors, copies of the popular Harford Historical Bulletin and antiques donated to the organization, will be open during the event. Some local authors will be present to sign copies of their books.
One of the highlights of this year's open house will be a display of newly acquired Bata Shoe Company artifacts from the collection of Jerry Valcik.
Representatives of the Archaeological Society of the Northern Chesapeake and the Junius B. Booth Society and Spirits of Tudor Hall will be present, as will experts on the Kelly Family of Liriodendron.
