Harford County law enforcement agencies will share $135,250 in federal highway safety grants and the local DUI court will receive $57,150 under disbursements of the grants statewide announced by Gov. Larry Hogan.In all, Maryland received $12.5 million which will go toward highway safety initiatives, according to a news release from Hogan's office. The federal funds were allocated based on crash data from the county or organization that applied and must be spend during the federal fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.The Harford County Sheriff's Office will receive $118,250, the municipal police departments in Aberdeen and Bel Air $7,000 apiece and the Havre de Grace Police Department $3,000. The DUI court, which is a diversion program for first-time offenders, will receive $57,150.Maryland State Police and Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department, both which have a presence in Harford, will receive $3,188,751 and $101,950, respectively. The Cecil County Sheriff's Office will receive $14,000.According to the governor's announcement, the federal grants will be used for such safety efforts as:• Preventing impaired, aggressive, and distracted driving;• Increasing the use of seat belts;• Increasing motorcyclist, pedestrian, and bicyclist safety efforts;• Funding child passenger safety fitting stations;• Funding traffic safety-related law enforcement operations;• Improving Maryland's traffic data systems.The largest portion of the federal funds, $3.84 million, will be used for statewide traffic safety initiatives, according to Hogan's office.
