Havre de Grace again tables request to move Relay for Life to lighthouse area

Organizers of the Relay for Life, the fundraiser for fighting cancer, are looking for a new home in Havre de Grace.And, after making a pitch to Mayor Bill Martin and the Havre de Grace City Council at back-to-back meetings this month, they're still looking.Jen Morris, of the Relay for Life group, is seeking permission to move the event from James R. Harris Stadium on Juniata Street to an area by the Concord Point Lighthouse that would use the Promenade as the walking trail for those participating.&quot;Our goal is to have it in a more public area,&quot; Morris said during the Oct. 17 city council meeting. &quot;We really want to make it a community event. We'd really like your support and try it for at least one year.&quot;The City Council, however, was unmoved when the request was first broached during its Oct. 3 meeting and again two weeks later.&quot;I'm an avid supporter of Relay for Life, but I'm not a supporter of it in its proposed location,&quot; Council President Steve Gamatoria said.So, for the second straight meeting, the council voted to table the request, rather than reject it completely.The motivation for moving the event is twofold, Morris said.&quot;We're looking to make an exciting change,&quot; she explained on Oct. 3, when she first presented the request. &quot;In an effort to increase participation and raise more money, we're planning a daytime event.&quot;Raising more money would include not paying Harford County's public school system about $2,000 to use the stadium, which Councilman Michael Hitchings said the school system should not be doing, regardless.Specifically, the group would like to use the park area around the lighthouse and the Promenade as the trail for those walking to raise money from noon to 11 p.m. on a Saturday next May.The request includes closing the street between the lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper's house at Concord and Alliance streets on the north and at Lafayette and Young streets to the west.&quot;I've lost a number of family members to cancer so this hits home for me,&quot; Hitchings said.With that, he moved to table the request again. Gamatoria seconded it. By a 5-1 vote, with Councilman Randy Craig dissenting, the matter was closed for another evening.
