The streets along several blocks of downtown Havre de Grace were closed for about two hours Thursday while BGE crews repaired a natural gas line; they are expected to keep working through the evening, according to a utility spokesperson.
Gas service, however, was not affected for any customers, Aaron Koos, of BGE, said.
Scott Hurst, fire chief of the Susquehanna Hose Company, said crews were alerted to a gas line break at North Union Avenue and Franklin Street at noon. Fire crews blocked traffic for about two to three blocks in each direction from the intersection as they waited for a BGE repair crew to arrive.
The Hose Company left the scene around 2 p.m., Hurst said. He said no injuries were reported.
Koos said a standpipe was struck while a crew was paving the street. He said the standpipe comes up to a gas line valve cover in the street, and it is used to access the gas main.
"It was not at a place that affected the flow of gas," he said of the break.
